Patient Stories
R.J.
R.J., a 37-year old mother of two came in with a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, weight gain, and depression. She had been having progression of her symptoms for a year and was 40 pounds over her desired weight. She had received a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes last year, but had not yet taken action because she said, “I did not want to believe the numbers.”
Her physician had prescribed an antidepressant medication, which she was hesitant to start. She was interested in evaluating her full range of treatment options.
Her goals were to lose weight, gain energy, improve her mood, and manage the symptoms of pain and fatigue she was having in as natural way as possible. She felt very ready to change her lifestyle, and was highly motivated to take control of her health.
We went through a complete evaluation of her past medical history and lab results. Then we reviewed a detailed nutritional history and evaluated her daily routine. I updated her on current research about approved dietary supplements in depression treatment, and worked out an exercise plan and prescription for her.
She kept track of her progress with a workbook and an exercise diary, and revamped her nutrition meal by meal. When she started exercising she could tolerate 10 minutes of walking at a time. She persevered and added 2-3 minutes every few days until she was up to 20 minutes of walking 5 times a week. At that point she connected with several friends in the neighborhood and they began to walk together.
R.J. gained energy and momentum over the next 3 months, and noted a significant improvement in her mood over time. She has lost weight steadily, and recently completed a 39.3 mile walk for breast cancer with the support of family and friends.
