James

James, a 4 month old with a history of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), whose parents were looking for ways to avoid giving him prescription medication.

James was growing well, and was on target with his developmental milestones, which was reassuring. He had frequent spitting up, and frequently cried after feeding. He had been seen regularly by his pediatrician who was also concerned about the frequency of his spitting up.

In the initial consult James' daily routine and sleep habits were reviewed, both he and his mother's nutrition were discussed in detail.

James’ history and growth charts were reviewed.

In addition to reviewing traditional conventional advice to reduce and prevent reflux in babies, recommendations for well-studied, baby-safe, probiotics, were given, and acupressure points commonly used in babies to help reduce reflux were reviewed and demonstrated. Suggestions for safe brands of herbal teas to reduce cramping and gas were given, along with information about local resources for infant massage, a technique she could use at home to help sooth James.

James tolerated the infant massage and acupressure points well, and so far has been able to avoid medication. The spitting up symptoms he was having are much reduced, and the whole family is better rested.
